Most of us overprepare for a new baby, especially if it’s our first. Don’t forget that babies grow fast, and very small garments will soon be outgrown. On the whole, it’s better to buy larger sizes (except for pajamas, which should fit snugly), since clothes that are too close-fitting may make your baby hot and rub his skin, Babies have no idea what they are wearing, so keep all clothing simple and comfortable.
Choosing clothes and accessories
Baby clothes are getting better all the time in terms of fabric, design, and washability, so shop around to get a feel for what’s available before making a final choice. You’ll see lots of things you don’t need and would never use, so don’t waste your money on unnecessary items. Ask a friend or relative with a baby what she found useful, and you may find she can pass you on things her baby has grown out of. Don’t be embarrassed about accepting such gifts.
You’ll need several changes of sheets, stretch suits, T-shirts, and shawls so that you can have a few in the wash without running out. Choose patterned fabrics or sheets and clothing, rather than solid pastels, so that every little stain doesn’t show. Natural fibers are best, as they allow sweat to evaporate, but remember that bedding and clothes with a high percentage of cotton may shrink once they’re washed, so buy at least a size bigger than you think you’ll need. Choose T-shirts with wide necks, as babies hate having tight things pulled over their heads. Don’t buy any clothing with buttons or zippers that are close to the neck. Also, think about what’s convenient for you. Even if you prefer cloth diapers, keep a supply of disposable diapers on hand for times when you need to make a quick change with as little fuss as possible.
